Background

The Conditions at Baseline

The 15 target schools โ€” serving girls in Classes 6 to 10 across six mandals of East Godavari District โ€” were assessed before the project began. The findings were consistent and acute:

โ€ข~6 schools had no girl's toilet of any kind โ€” girls used open ground
โ€ข~7 schools had shared or badly deteriorated facilities with no running water
โ€ข~2 large schools had partial provision, but overcrowded given enrolment
โ€ขNot one school had a menstrual hygiene support system
โ€ขNot one school had a hygiene team or female point-of-contact for girls
โ€ขNo school had sanitary pad provision or a disposal mechanism

Surveys confirmed that the majority of girls were missing school during their periods โ€” not by choice, but because attending was not safe or manageable without any private facility. This is consistent with national research showing up to 65% absenteeism during menstruation in schools with no separate toilet.

Critically, girls across all schools expressed strong aspirations โ€” for nursing, teaching, further study. The barrier was structural, not attitudinal. That is what this project addressed.

Activities Delivered

Three Results, Fully Achieved

Result 1

Community Awareness Campaigns

  • โœ“Healthcare professionals delivered WASH sessions across all 15 schools โ€” hygiene, handwashing, water safety, sanitation and health
  • โœ“Menstrual hygiene education delivered to girls in Classes 6โ€“10 by female educators, covering safe management, reducing stigma, and managing periods at school
  • โœ“Sanitation kits distributed with training on use and replenishment
  • โœ“WASH awareness sessions for students, teachers, parents, and school support staff
Result 2

Capacity Building in Schools

  • โœ“School hygiene teams formed at all 15 schools โ€” administration staff, teachers, and senior students
  • โœ“Trained on sanitation and hygiene practices, team responsibilities, and maintenance procedures
  • โœ“Written toilet maintenance guidelines provided to every school
  • โœ“Hygiene education integrated into regular school activities and assessments
Result 3

Toilet Block Infrastructure

  • โœ“Shipping containers modified into toilet block units โ€” internal partitioning, plumbing fittings, ventilation, electrical connections
  • โœ“Installed at all 15 schools with plumbing and electrical work completed
  • โœ“Project branding applied and GPS-tagged for verification
  • โœ“All schools UDISE-coded โ€” data verifiable through national UDISE+ database

Interested in Funding the Next Phase?

MTN has identified additional schools in East Godavari District with the same unmet needs. We welcome conversations with institutional funders and NGOs interested in replicating this model.
